Sean Dyche has boldly suggested he would do a better job at Manchester United than current boss Ruben Amorim. The ex-Everton and Burnley manager insisted his trademark 4-4-2 setup is exactly what United need to get back on track.
Often labelled as an old-school, straight-talking coach, Dyche still feels his pragmatic approach would thrive at Old Trafford if he ever got the opportunity.
“I may get hammered for it, but I bet I could win more games with that squad playing a 4-4-2,” Dyche told ex-England manager Sam Allardyce on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast. “People keep talking about his [Amorim’s] philosophy and it isn’t working. It’s fine getting to five or 10 games, but once you get to 20 games, it clearly isn’t working.”

Nine months into his tenure at Old Trafford, Ruben Amorim has managed just 16 wins from 43 games — a modest 37% win rate. That figure is only marginally better than Dyche’s own career average of 34%.
Ruben Amorim has also found it tough to replicate the slick, attacking football that made his Sporting CP side so admired. His preference for a three-at-the-back system hasn’t clicked in Manchester, with United’s squad still struggling to adapt to the demanding style.

To try and solve the problem, United have gone big in the transfer market. More than £200 million has been invested in a completely new front three this summer, while £26m was spent in January on Patrick Dorgu — a wing-back tailor-made for Amorim’s system.
For Dyche, that spending only highlights how poorly United’s existing squad fits the Portuguese coach’s vision. Even so, he gave credit to both the club and Amorim for staying committed to their footballing principles despite the rocky start.
“I might be wrong because they’ve brought in three big hitters this summer, so it wouldn’t work with the players they had, but maybe the new players will do better,” he said.

“On the one hand, I like the fact they’re sticking with it, and it is Man United. You’re under massive pressure to get it right. But on the other hand, you wouldn’t normally survive that situation. Amorim’s been given more time than most.
