Dwight Yorke names three players United should have signed instead of Hojlund.

Dwight Yorke admits he feels sympathy for struggling Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund.

The player, who was signed for £72 million from Atalanta during the summer, has demonstrated glimpses of promise in the current season, particularly in European competitions. However, he has yet to find the net in the Premier League.

Hojlund’s goalless streak has reached 14 games following his inability to score in the loss to West Ham on Saturday. He seemed disappointed when substituted just before the hour mark.

Erik ten Hag later disclosed that the 20-year-old had faced health challenges leading up to the game. Former United striker Dwight Yorke argues that undue pressure has been placed on the young player.

In the last year, United has been associated with numerous seasoned strikers. Yorke, a treble winner, finds it astonishing that several prominent players have ended up joining rival clubs.

He told the Daily Mail: ‘I think they should have paid £150m for (Erling) Haaland. Harry Kane is an obvious choice. And (Victor) Osimhen is another I would have tried for.

‘I feel sorry for the kid Rasmus, he’s suffering all around. I didn’t know anything about him until he came to United for such a huge fee.

‘He’s 20 years of age, never had top-level experience, and you can see he’s in that development stage

‘You can’t bring a rookie in to do a man’s job. It just doesn’t work. He’s making the game look a little bit difficult. But who is he learning from?

‘We had four outstanding players. Seasoned pros who knew the razzmatazz of the Premier League and how to manage their game. I don’t think United have got anybody.

‘We just look a little bit ragged in every department. Players’ careers have come to a standstill at United. Players who shouldn’t be at the club are still there.

‘The manager is the one who sets the tone at the football club. It’s your duty to improve these players.

‘Ten Hag will die by his philosophy but if I were in that position, I would do things differently.’
